The fixed 19-25% APR on 8lends is set in USD at the moment of investment. For someone spending in euros, the result also depends on exchange rates when euros become USD and payouts become euros. Those rates are not fixed by the platform, Collateral Agent or borrower. Currency exposure remains separate from the risk of a borrower failing to repay.

Why is a fixed 19-25% APR rate not the same thing as a fixed return in euros?

The rate fixes how interest is calculated in USD. It does not fix what those dollars will buy in euros when you convert them.

This is the currency risk of investing in USD loans from Europe: a fixed rate in USD can produce a variable return in euros.

Where does the exchange rate actually affect an investor's outcome — accrual, entry, or exit?

The exchange rate enters the realised calculation at conversion. At entry, it determines how much USD your euros purchase. At exit, it determines how many euros you receive for the USD payout.

Interest accrual happens in USD within the platform. A movement in the exchange rate does not rewrite the contractual rate or the number of dollars accrued. It changes their euro value.

Conversion into the settlement currency takes place outside the platform. After a payout is credited, you may withdraw it or reinvest. Withdrawing USD to an external wallet is not itself a conversion into euros; the relevant exit rate is the one used when the money actually becomes your home currency.

Is currency risk realized gradually or at a single point in time?

It is realized at the conversion points, although the euro value can fluctuate between them. There may be several exit points if you convert interest payments separately and principal later.

Reinvesting a USD payout postpones that conversion and leaves the funds exposed to further currency movement.

What do two scenarios with the same rate and different exit rates look like?

Consider a hypothetical 12-month investment. Both scenarios use the same USD principal and the same rate, selected within the fixed 19-25% APR range. Assume USD interest over the year equals 20% of principal and the borrower pays everything in full and on time.

To isolate currency movement, normalize the initial euro outlay to 100 units. If the exchange rate remained unchanged, the final USD principal plus interest would convert to 120 euro units. This is an illustration, not a quoted exchange rate. Fees, taxes and reinvestment are excluded, and all payments are assumed to be converted together at the end.

Here, a higher exit rate means more euros received per USD.

USD interest over the year20% of principal20% of principal

Final euro value120 × 1.10 = 132120 × 0.90 = 108

The same USD cash flow produces different euro results. Currency movement applies to the principal as well as the interest, so it cannot simply be added to or subtracted from the interest percentage.

A sufficiently adverse movement could leave the final euro proceeds below the initial euro outlay, despite full USD repayment. Neither scenario predicts a direction or describes a historical market period.

Can an investor know their exact euro return in advance?

No. You can know the contractual USD rate and repayment schedule, but the future conversion rate remains unknown. The eventual USD-to-EUR conversion affects your investment return in euros alongside the payments actually received.

Why is currency risk a market risk, not a credit risk?

Credit risk concerns whether the borrower meets its payment obligations. Collateral and enforcement arrangements address recovery if it does not, although they do not eliminate the possibility of loss.

Exchange rate risk in P2P lending concerns the value of the payments you receive in your spending currency. A borrower can meet every USD obligation while those dollars convert into fewer euros than you expected. No missed payment is needed for that outcome.

Does collateral or the BuyBack mechanism cover currency losses?

No. Collateral arrangements and BuyBack mechanisms concern credit-related obligations under their respective terms. They do not lock the conversion rate between USD and euros or compensate for an unfavorable exchange-rate movement.

The distinction applies even where a mechanism results in recovery of the full USD principal. Receiving the dollars owed and preserving the original euro value are separate outcomes.

The fixed 19-25% APR rate applies to the USD amount only; the USD/EUR exchange rate at entry and at withdrawal is not fixed by the platform, the Collateral Agent, or the borrower, and moves independently of whether the loan is repaid on time.

How does the 4-16 month loan term relate to currency exposure?

The 4-16 month loan term creates a period between the entry conversion and eventual conversion of repayments. A longer term extends that period, giving exchange rates more time to differ from their entry level.

It does not determine the direction of movement. A longer loan does not necessarily produce a worse euro outcome, and a shorter one does not remove currency exposure.

Keeping repayments in USD after maturity can extend exposure beyond the original loan term.

Why does the USD minimum change the entry price in euros?

The minimum investment is USD 100. Its euro equivalent depends on the conversion rate when you enter, rather than a permanent euro threshold.

If one euro purchases more dollars, fewer euros are needed to reach that minimum. If it purchases fewer dollars, more euros are needed. This changes the euro entry amount without changing the platform’s USD requirement.

Platform investor fees for investing and collecting repayments are 0%; Base network transaction fees are paid in ETH. External conversion costs are separate and are set by the service you use. Tax treatment depends on residence, and the platform does not provide tax advice.

The 8lends platform is run by CLEARCHAIN CORP, registered in British Columbia, Canada, and registered with FINTRAC as a money services business. Maclear AG (Switzerland), a member of PolyReg SRO, acts as the independent Collateral Agent - it does not operate the platform, is not its parent company, and does not hold investor funds.

Investing involves risk, including possible loss of principal. Returns are not guaranteed.

The rate fixes the USD interest calculation, while conversion rates remain unfixed. Your euro result depends on the euros spent at entry and the euros received when payouts are converted. The borrower may repay exactly what is owed in USD while currency movement changes the value available for your euro expenses.

It affects your realised result at entry and exit conversions. Interest accrues in USD without being recalculated because your spending currency is euros. If you convert several payouts on different dates, each conversion has its own rate. Merely moving USD outside the platform does not itself realise a euro exchange rate.

No, those mechanisms address credit-related obligations under their terms, rather than exchange-rate losses. They do not fix how many euros a USD repayment will purchase. Even recovery of the full USD principal can produce a lower euro value than expected if the conversion rate has moved against you.

No, they are distinct risks. Credit risk concerns the borrower’s ability and willingness to meet its obligations. Currency risk concerns what the received USD payments are worth in euros. Full, timely repayment can coexist with a disappointing euro result; that outcome alone does not indicate a borrower default.

The a4-16 month termhttps://www.8lends.io/blog/investment-horizon-and-loan-term defines the loan period during which entry and exit exchange rates can diverge. A longer period extends exposure without determining whether the movement will help or hurt you. Actual conversion dates also matter: converting interest during the term and retaining principal in USD creates different exposure periods.
